According to the FDA

An Authorized Generic is, "an approved brand name drug that is marketed without the brand name on its label. Other than the fact that it does not have the brand name on its label, it is the exact same drug product as the branded product."

When you hear “generic,” do you think of an “off brand” that is a lesser version of “the real thing”? Or do you see it as a less-expensive version that is every bit as good as the name brand?

In the world of pharmaceuticals, it can be one, or the other. Yes, there are actually two types of generic prescription medication: Regular Generics and Authorized Generics.

This can lead to a lot of confusion as to the difference between these two types of medications, so it's important that Americans understand the differences and make the appropriate decisions based on their unique needs.

You'll see with medications such as Lyrica (seen in our images here), that the Pfizer brand Lyrica is being packaged and sold in the Greenstone generic bottle.

It is literally the exact same medication, packaged differently.

Of course, this raises concerns about how Greenstone is able to sell brand name medication this way...

Greenstone is owned by Pfizer.

Put simply: An Authorized Generic is the exact same drug as the Brand.

A Regular Generic is a "copy" of a Brand Name drug. Regular Generics have the same active ingredients, but may have other differences, such as different inactive ingredients.

However, an Authorized Generic is the exact same drug and more often than not is made by the exact same manufacturer. The only real difference is that it's sold at a significantly lower price to compete with Regular Generics.

By packaging some of their brand name medication in a Greenstone bottle Pfizer can sell their medication as both a high-cost Brand name product AND a low-cost Generic. This allows them to promote and sell their brand name product while also competing with regular generic manufacturers.

The good news for Americans is that we gain options to help meet our individual needs.
